Johann Georg Schütz


(Frankfurt/Main 1755–1813) An idyllic classical family scene, signed and dated lower right: Georgius Schütz fecit Roma 1789, oil on canvas, 84 x 126 cm, in an original gilded frame,

On the reverse inventary label with the initials FF – these may refer to Duke Friedrich Franz of Mecklenburg. Johann Georg Schütz trained at first under his father, Christian Georg Schütz the Elder. Between 1776 and 1779 he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, then stayed for a longer period of time with his father in Frankfurt and in 1784 he travelled to Rome, where he lived and worked for six years. Following this visit he acquired the nickname,“Römer?Schütz”. He lived in Wilhelm Tischbein's house on the Via del Corso. In 1786 Johann Wolfgang Goethe arrived in Rome and lived with Schütz in this house. Goethe greatly admired the works of the young artist and paid tribute to them in his work, 'Winkelmann und sein Jahrhundert'. Schütz primarily produced history and genre paintings, but also portraits and landscapes.
